UpgradingOverview

Upgrading

Most Rustrak releases need nothing from you: pull the new image and restart. The ones that do need something get a guide of their own, listed below. Read every guide between the version you run and the one you are moving to, in order.

Versions you cannot skip

None so far. Any 0.x release can be upgraded to any later one directly, as long as you follow each guide in between. If that ever changes, the version you have to stop at will be listed here and in its release notes.

How versions work

Rustrak is on 0.x, and follows the usual reading of semver for it:

  • A patch release (0.15.1) fixes things. It never needs a step from you and never has a guide.
  • A minor release (0.16.0) can change behaviour, configuration or deployment. If it does, it has a guide here, and its release notes open with what needs your attention.

The server, the dashboard, @rustrak/client and @rustrak/mcp always share one version number. A client and a server with the same number are known to work together.

Before any upgrade

  1. Back up. Database migrations only run forward, so the backup is what lets you go back. See Backups.
  2. Pin the version. Use a versioned image tag such as rustrak/rustrak-server:v0.15.0 in production rather than latest, so a restart never upgrades you by surprise.
  3. Read the guides between your version and the target.
  4. Upgrade, then check that the server started, that you can sign in, and that events still arrive. Settings, About shows the running version.

Going back

Rustrak checks at startup that it knows every migration the database has applied. A release that added one refuses to be replaced by an older one, with an error like this:

Migration error: migration 20260916000000 was previously applied but is missing in the resolved migrations

This protects your data from a server that does not understand its schema. To go back, restore the backup you took before upgrading and start the older image. Each guide says whether its release adds migrations and, where it is safe, how to undo them by hand.
